Tupaia was Polynesian star navigator and part of the HMS Endeavour's first voyage.
Tupaia came from a Polynesian island, Raiatea French Polynesia that James Cook stayed at then parted with Tupaia.
Tupaia was most known for his skills for navigation being by Lt. James Cook as navigational guide on the latter's famous first voyage of discovery in HM Bark Endeavour.
The reason Tupaia was in New Zealand was because of the voyage of the Endeavour.
what happened to Tupaia? Well first he got scurvy because of the lack of vitamin C and then he died of pneumonia and Dysentery.
I found that the sailors on the Endeavour tried to help Tupaia but he refused to take the scurvy pills and that James Cook named places that already had names.
